Michael Pattern was born c.1768 in Terrington St Clement, Norfolk, the son of Thomas Pattern and Jane (née Twiddy). He married Mary Payne in 1789 and there are nine known children. He died in 1828 in Walpole St Peter, Norfolk.

Research Notes
Worth noting that Michael was buried on the same day as his wife Mary.
A witness at Michael’s wedding to Mary in 1789 at Upwell was James Long which ties up nicely with an indenture record from 1784 when a Michael Pattern was apprenticed to butcher James Long of Upwell, Norfolk. Note that Michael was described in the marriage register as being of “Terrington St Clement” (which is important when considering who his parents were). This also perhaps gives a viable reason for Michael to have moved away from Terrington St Clement to Upwell (some 12 miles to the south) in order to serve his apprenticeship.
Based on the birth locations of his children, Michael had relocated to Hilgay (around 10 miles southeast of Upwell) by around 1798 and was then in the Shoreditch area of London around 1802 (where son Robert was born and baptised). The exact reasons for these moves remains uncertain, but was presumably linked to his occupation as a butcher. He’d returned to the Kings Lynn area (Tilney All Saints) by 1804 and then moved 5 miles west to Walpole St Peter by 1809 where he eventually died in April 1828.
Michael’s Parents?
When my late father, Mark Pattern, did his research into the family tree, he came to the conclusion that the parents of Michael were Michael Pattern and Mary (née Cowley) of Holkham, Norfolk, who married there on 22 November 1767 and baptised a son named Michael on 31 December 1769 at Thornham All Saints, Norfolk (10 miles west of Holkham). The elder Michael appears to have died on 1 January 1792 aged 71 (according to a Thornham gravestone transcription). The younger Michael appears to have married Ruth Hobson in 1798 at Thornham — importantly he was described as being from the parish of Thornham, so is highly likely to be the same Michael born there in 1769. Michael and Ruth are buried at St Michael’s Church, Ryston, Norfolk (he died in 1842 aged 73 and she in 1858 aged 83).1 The Will of Michael Pattern of Riston-with-Roxham is held in the Norfolk Record Office.2
To my mind, Thomas Pattern is therefore a more likely father due to his marriage occurring at Terrington St Clement, which is where this Michael was born. Also, the Michael in our family tree was described as being of “Terrington St Clement” when he married Mary Payne at Upwell.
