Thomas Pattern was born c.1790 in Upwell, Norfolk, the son of Michael Pattern and Mary (née Payne). He married Mary Ward in 1819 and there are four known children.

Transported for Life
Since his wife Mary remarried in December 1829, it seems almost certain that Thomas was the person of that name who was sentenced to death at Norfolk Assizes in August 1827 for stealing a sheep. A few weeks later, the sentence was altered to “transported for life” and he sailed to Tasmania aboard the Marmion, arriving on 6 March 1828.1 His younger brother John had already been transported to Tasmania for seven years in 1826.
The Australian Convict Transportation Registers and Home Office records give his age as 35, which tallies with our Thomas, and he is described as being a native of Upwell.2
In March 1833, John Wilcox and Thomas were “sentenced to fifty lashes each, for absconding from Captain Betts, at New Town”.3 Thomas was granted a conditional pardon in November 1844.4 No subsequent death record has been found in either the Tasmanian or UK records.

The following appalling number of convicts have been removed from Norwich Castle, to the York and Leviathan Hulks, at Portsmouth, pursuant to their sentence:—

Gooch, Joseph Loom, Josiah Crisp, and John Baxter, for sheep-stealing; William Rose, Henry Pitcher, Philip Scales Tink, for horse-stealing; Geo. Witham, Charles Witham, John Harrow, Thos. Farrow, and Christopher Mileham, for housebreaking; Luke Lawn, for ass-stealing; Wm. Priestley, for stealing from the person; John Twaites and Robt. Wick, for stealing in a dwelling-house above the value of 40s.
