War Topics.

By the latest English mail Miss Ruth Tuxworth, Mengha, has received letters and cards from her brother (Pte. George Tuxworth) from Leichlingen, Germany. This soldier writes in an interesting strain, and amongst other things speaks of the scarcity of food and clothing in Germany. Apparently the civilians are giving our soldiers no trouble. Still, it is evident that they are unwelcome guests, and their presence in Germany is resented. I have to hand also a card written to the same lady by Mrs Cranstoun, of England. This lady sends grateful thanks for newspapers sent her for distribution to members of our troops. Mrs Cranstoun is a sister of the late Colonel Legge, of “Cullenswood House,” Cullenswood, Eastern Tasmania, and ever since the commencement of the war and her enforced stay in England, she has occupied her time in going round the military hospitals visiting the wounded, interesting herself more particularly in Tasmanian lads. In her card she mentions having met Pte. S. J. Alford, of “Stag Farm ,’’ at hospital in Harefield, England. Mrs Cranstoun and Pte. Alford are both on their way to Tasmania again, and are expected to arrive at almost any time.
