Research Notes
The family story is that Mary Jane, who had been a school teacher or possibly even a headmistress, suffered from postnatal depression after the birth of her third child, Horace, and was committed to Bracebridge Asylum (Wikipedia) near Lincoln where she remained until her death in 1938. My mum says that Mary Jane’s husband, Albert Edward Pattern, would catch the bus each week to visit her.
There appears to be an entry for “M. J. P.” (transcribed as “M. J. S.” on Ancestry) aged 48 at Bracebridge in the 1921 Census.
Mary Jane is an ancestor on my father’s side. Curiously, a relative on my mother’s side (Grace Jessie Petch) appears to have been in Bracebridge Pauper Lunatic Asylum at the same time as Mary Jane.
According to my Mum, Albert would catch the bus to Nottingham each week to visit Mary at Bracebridge.
