Man stole tin of salmon
A 42-year-old Holbeach man who stole a tin of salmon from the town’s Co-op store was given a two year conditional discharge by East Elloe magistrates on Thursday.
Neville Eric Petch, of 29 Park Lane, admitted stealing the tin worth 52p from the Co-op on June 30.
Mr Andrew Donaldson, prosecuting, said Petch was seen by a store detective to take the tin of salmon from his wire shopping basket, wrap it in a cardboard margarine container and slip it into his coat pocket.
He rearranged the rest of his goods and paid for them at the checkout before leaving the store without making any attempt to pay for the salmon.
Mr Brian Molson, for Petch, said his client “by no stretch of the imagination” fell into the usual class of shop lifter.
He said Petch could only see through one eye and he had to receive regular treatment for his good eye at a London hospital.
He said he suffered from mental and physical illnesses which prevented him from working and was taking medication for depression. The magistrates read doctor’s reports before coming to their decision.
