Obituary

Hilda Pattern

Hilda passed away the evening of January 11, 2018 doing what she loved the most, sitting in her “comfy chair” watching Knowledge Network.

Hilda was born in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. When Hilda finished high school the family moved to the west coast settling in Maple Ridge in 1938. Hilda is predeceased by her sister Edna and her husband of 67 years, Jack. They were married in November 1940. They lived in Victoria during the second world war where their son Ken was born. After the War they moved back to Maple Ridge where their daughter Marilyn was born. They moved to a 25 acre property in Albion in 1953. While living on the farm Jack barbered in Haney, they raised mink on the farm and finally built and operated a coin laundry in Haney.

At ages 54 (Hilda) and 55 (Jack) they sold the remaining laundry business and retired. Not quite sure where they wanted to settle in their retirement they first looked at Salt Spring Island but when they arrived on Gabriola Island, in 1980, they knew this would be home. Jack loved his gardening and Hilda fit right into the arts community as an accomplished potter and painter. Hilda was a life member and former president of the Palette People. You can still find Hilda’s pottery and paintings on the island.

Hilda was one of Gabriola’s treasures and the family know how loved she was. She will be really missed by her daughter Marilyn Heraty, son Ken Pattern (Helen), grandson Aron Leyshon (Saow), granddaughter Cara Leyshon (Chris), granddaughter Kathryn Stack (Terry), great grandchildren Michael, Julia, Alexander, Anthony and Anabelle, brother Roy Lundrie (Janet), brother- in-law Harold Pattern (Clare) and the many nieces and nephews.
