Elizabeth Jane & Herbert Petch

Herbert Petch was born in 1877 in Brandon, Suffolk, the son of Alfred Pooley Petch and Susan Elizabeth (née Lingwood). He married Elizabeth Jane Jackson in 1898 and there are three known children. He died in 1951 at 25 Stukeley Road, Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

Research Notes

By 1901, Herbert was a miller and baker residing at Rampart Mill at Gedney (sometimes referred to as Rampart Farm, Gedney Post Mill and the Old Post Mill). The windmill was demolished in 1909 but is marked on the 1880s and early 1900s O.S. maps. He retired prior to 1919 and, by 1921, the Petch family had moved to Stukeley Road, Holbeach.

Holbeach Couple’s Golden Wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Petch, of 25, Stukeley Road, Holbeach, celebrated their golden wedding on Christmas Day, at well as the birthday of their only daughter, Jessie, and Mr. Petch’s own birthday, and to mark the triple anniversary a family party was held.

Mr. and Mrs. Petch were married at Whaplode church and have lived in East Elloe nearly all their lives. Mr. Petch was a baker at Long Sutton and Gedney, where he took over the business at the old post mill. On the day that King Edward VII. was crowned he met with an unfortunate accident, and lost part of the index finger of his right hand. He was at the mill for nearly 20 years, but was obliged to retire from the bakery business owing to ill health and moved to Holbeach to become the manager of a coal business.

Mr. Petch took a considerable interest in public affairs at Gedney, being a member of the Parish Council, a representative on the Rural District Council, and a member of the Board of Guardians. He sat on the local tribunal during the first world war. The second son of Mr. Alfred Pooley Petch, a fish merchant, of Church Street, Holbeach, he married Miss Eliza Jane Jackson, the eldest daughter of Mr. William Jackson, of Whaplode.

They have three children — Mr. Herbert Petch and Mr. William Eric Petch, of Holbeach, and Mrs. Jessie Bragg, wife of the stationmaster at Massingham, and there are nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
