The Pattern Story
An extract from Mark Pattern’s research into the family tree…
The marriage certificate for the wedding of Michael and Rosanna reveals that the bride and groom and the two witnesses, Michael (uncle) and Mary (sister) all entered an X for their signature. Our great-grandparents established their home at Tilney All Saints, and when the 1871 Census is taken, they have four children — Annie (6 years old) born at Long Sutton, Sarah Jane (4 years) born also at Long Sutton, John (two years old) and Mary (year old) both born at Terrington St. John. The 1871 Census is the last record we have of our great grandfather Michael. We will see that he fathered four more children, Robert, Albert Edward, Agnes and Matthew, but by 1879 he has disappeared from the scene. Did he emigrate to America in order to avoid deportation following the charge of the theft of a sheep?1 Interestingly I did have just one email from an American who was enquiring about “Rosanna, the English wife of Michael Pattern?” I immediately replied and asked for any information about Michael Pattern — “was there an American wife of Michael?” — but with that the communication went dead!
- I wasn’t able to locate details for this alleged theft, however a different Michael Pattern (from Walpole St Peter) was charged with various offences around this time.
