Research Notes
In 1851, less than 2 years after the birth of her son William, she was working as a “general servant” to widowed farmer Sarah Ross(sp?) at Fleet in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. Young William was living with Mary’s parents.
In 1861, when she was working as a housekeeper, William was living with her widowed mother at Newtown, Cambs.
As with her paternal grandmother, “Payne” is also spelt “Pain” on some documents.
