HOLBEACH MAN TO APPEAL.
William Cyril Pooley Petch (30), of Church Street, Holbeach, said he had been a pacifist to the best of his belief, ever since he had been old enough to think for himself.
He was trying in his life to follow the example set by Christ, and had given free meals to people who needed them.
Judge Langman: You pay taxes, the major portion of which goes to the war effort. What has your conscience to my about that?
Petch: There are some things I cannot get out of.
Judge Langman: But you think you can get out of military service?
Petch: I am prepared to pay for my conscience. I have ruined my business as a wet and fried fish merchant to a certain extent because I have refused to handle fish caught by armed trawlers.
Petch was registered for non-combatant service. He gave notice of appeal.
