William Pattern was born in 1881 in Hull, Yorkshire (East Riding), the son of William Pattern and Charity (née Baker). He married Ethel Ward in 1903 and there are four known children. He died in 1974 in Vancouver, Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia, Canada.

The Pattern Story
An extract from Mark Pattern’s research into the family tree…
William and Charity Pattern had eleven children, but two died in infancy. One of his sons, William, with his wife Ethel and two children, Eric and Eva, emigrated to Canada. They sailed on a ship call the “Mongolia” in 1912 and Eva remembered how she saw debris floating on the sea and being told it was “stuff” from the Titanic that had just sunk! This William Pattern became the owner of a log mill and camp having fathered four more children resulting in several Pattern families still in the Winnipeg area of Canada. Their daughter, Eva, married Gordon Johnston and they raised nine children and they too had a mill and the place where they lived was named Johnston’s Mill Lake in Saskatchewan. John Baker Pattern was another son of William and Charity and like his brother decided to make his future in Canada. He stowed away on a ship heading for Canada and as they were nearing the end of the voyage, he jumped overboard and swam to the shore. He then travelled on to Winnipeg to join his brother William and his family. All the above information was given to me by Marilyn Heraty, who lives on Gabriola Island, West Canada.
Research Notes
William and his family are believed to have emigrated to Canada in 1912 aboard the S.S. Mongolian. Footage of the same ship departing Liverpool in 1906 can be found on the BFI website.
