Celia served as a telephonist in the Royal Air Force in Lincolnshire between 20 April 1918 and 4 July 1919. Her demob certificate (National Archives) gives the following description:

DEATH.
We regret to record the death of Miss Celia Pattern, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Pattern, of Market Place, which took place on Tuesday evening last, after a lingering illness, at the early age of 27 years. Deceased was well known in the parish and much respected, and much sympathy is extended to the bereaved parents and family.

The funeral of Miss Celia F. Pattern took place at the Wesleyan Church amidst every token of sympathy on Saturday afternoon last. The Rev. H. W. Slader, of Spalding, conducted the service.
