Ernest William Petch was born in 1880 in Brandon Farry, Suffolk, the son of Alfred Pooley Petch and Susan Elizabeth (née Lingwood). He married Ethel Mary Edwards in 1907 and there are two known children. He died in 1965 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

SATURDAY SERIES
A tailor of many years standing and now retired, a well-known local preacher and a man who specialises in arranging holidays abroad for parties each year, is Mr. Ernest William Petch, of 155 Lincoln Road, Peterborough.
Born at Holbeach, Lincolnshire, on July 17, 1880, Mr. Petch is a son of Mr. Alfred Pooley Petch, who, as a youth was put to the tailoring trade but was never taught sufficient to carry on with it. He eventually became a fish salesman, and after that, a liveryman.
Ernest Petch went to a Holbeach boarding school. He left at the age of 14, but after six months returned again. He finally closed the school doors behind him at the age of 15.
He was first of all sent to a coal merchant to train as a clerk but after a short time decided to leave. He showed some interest in tailoring and was apprenticed with George Willerton, High Street. Holbeach.
At the age of 20 he went to Hull where he got a job as an improver. From there he moved on to Ripon, Yorkshire.
He married Miss Ethel E. Keats at Leamington Congregational church in 1907.
His wife was in poor health and it was suggested that they should move somewhere near the east coast. They came to Peterborough in 1918 and then rented a shop near the old burnt-out Baptist Chapel in Queen Street from Dr. J. T. Walker.
In 1920 there was a trade slump. Mr. Petch decided to leave Queen Street to carry on his business at his home in Lincoln Road. He retired at 65.
But retirement did not mean a life of idleness for Mr. Petch.
A tutor tailor was required for adult classes organised by the Peterborough Joint Education Board. He was the successful applicant.
Mr. Petch specialises in holiday organisation. This year he is organising a party to visit four countries Switzerland, Austria, Jugoslavia and Italy.

DEATHS
PETCH. On October 8, 1965, at his home, 58 Grimshaw Road, Peterborough, Ernest William, aged 85 years, much loved father of Elsie and Mabel. Funeral service on Tuesday, October 12, at Wentworth Street Church, Peterborough, 10.30am, followed by cremation at Marholm.

Mr. Ernest William Petch, of 58 Grimshaw Road, Peterborough, master tailor, who until recently taught tailoring at the Adult Institute, Peterborough, and who died last October 8, aged 85, left £1,474 gross, £1,385 net.
