Sarah Hill was born c.1832 in Clenchwarton, Norfolk, the daughter of John Hill. She married Matthew Burkinshaw Martin in 1852 and Robert Pattern in 1865, and there are two known children. She died in 1916 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
