Evidence ‘flimsy’
The case against a 72-year-old motorist was dismissed by Worthing magistrates after the defending solicitor described prosecution evidence as “flimsy, unreliable and unsupported.”
Mr. T. E. Bangor-Jones was appearing for Robert Oliver Pattern, a hairdresser, of Arundel Road, Worthing, who was summoned for careless driving at the junction of Chapel Road and North Street on May 27.
The case arose from a collision involving Pattern’s car and a motor-cycle ridden by Mr. William A. Deacon, of Worthing.

Evidence ‘flimsy, unreliable’
A solicitor at Worthing on Friday said that prosecution evidence in a driving case was 64 flimsy, unreliable and unsupported.”
He was Mr T. E. Bangor-Jones (Parker and Bangor-Jones), who was appearing for 72-year-old hairdresser, Mr Robert Oliver Pattern, of Arundel Road, whom the police had summonsed for careless driving. The case was dismissed. Mr Pattern pleaded not guilty.
Motor-cyclist William Alexander Deacon, of Worthing, said he found Mr Pattern’s car blocking the eastern side of Chapel Road at the junction of North Street as he approached on May 27.
He said Mr Pattern had driven out of North Street and added. “I was doing 29 mph and at first tried to pass in front of him, then behind him. But I clipped his rear mudguard.”
Mr Pattern told the court that he drove very carefully and slowly into the junction because of poor visibility towards the Teville Road traffic lights. The motor-cycle had approached “very fast.” He had worked in North Street since 1917 and had driven through the junction more than 15,000 times. He had been driving for 38 years without a traffic conviction.
